The Eastern Africa region, comprising of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan and most recently DR Congo has been experiencing increase in population growth. The population is estimated at 300 million in 2023 and it is projected to double by 2050. With an annual population growth rate of 3%, the demand for animal protein: egg, milk and meat, is increasing annually. The region has a livestock population of over 550 million (66% Ruminant and 34 Non-Ruminant) 2, but each of the country experiences feed deficit. The case for Kenya having a 60% feed deficit according Kenya ministry of Livestock reports. Remote Livestock husbandry practices, issues of animal breed quality and the triple animal feed concerns (Availability, Quality and Cost) continues to affect the performance of the Livestock sector in the eastern Africa region.
To meet the demand for both animal protein for human and feed, the region need to employ new strategies in the sector. Innovative Science and Technology, though not the only solution, can be used to contribute to finding sustainable agricultural solutions. Good practices from other regions of the world can be shared to contribute to address food and feed insecurity frequently experienced the region.
